The Big Shwop, New Zealand’s largest eco-fashion event, is back in Wellington just in time for summer. Sunday 11 December will see the first floor gallery of the St James Theatre transformed into a vibrant shwop-shop, for female fashionistas to shwop till they drop.
The act of shwopping is simple - women swap their quality clothes for vouchers and then swap their vouchers for new clothes. Its great fun too, because The Big Shwop is an experience complete with complimentary MOMO wine, great music to shwop by, talks on sustainability and fantastic goodies from Wellington-based international skincare brand Trilogy to take away.
Inga Boyd, co-director, says The Big Shwop provides an exciting experience for women to update their wardrobes, “At each event hundreds of people shwop thousands of quality clothes. It’s a really amazing sight.” Kate Hardcastle further explains The Big Shwop’s popularity, “A lot of women have fantastic clothes that just sit in their wardrobes unworn. What’s the point of them hanging there? By shwopping those clothes, in just one afternoon people can exchange them for a whole new wardrobe of things that they will wear – it’s a no-brainer!”
And The Big Shwop is not just a fun way to shop, it makes a lot of sense too. In these times of heightened environmental awareness and financial uncertainty, The Big Shwop provides a useful way to update your wardrobe without making a dent in your conscience - or your bank account. “Cheaply made fashion is no good. It’s no good for the planet, it’s no good for the people who produce it, and it’s no good for us,” says co-director Sarah Hopkinson. “The Big Shwop encourages people to buy quality made clothes when they buy new, and when they don’t do that, to shwop.”
The Big Shwop Wellington 2011 is the perfect chance to revamp your old wardrobe and kick-start summer with some gorgeous new outfits. Its also a great way to spend a day out with your closest girls and celebrate the festive season while embracing sustainability!
