Rodger Fox and the Wellington Jazz Orchestra have scored another coup. In April 2012 they will be bringing the world’s foremost male jazz vocalist today, Kurt Elling, to New Zealand.
Elling has been DownBeat's Critic's Poll "Male Jazz Vocalist of the Year" for the past twelve years, and The New York Times declared “Elling is the standout male vocalist of our time.“ His rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technique and emotional depth.
“Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling," said the Washington Post. "With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz.”
Said Rodger Fox, “We are delighted to be able to bring Kurt to New Zealand for a limited number of concerts with the Wellington Jazz Orchestra.”
In addition, performing with the WJO will be special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal. Eric was a member of the Chick Corea Elektric Band for whom he recorded six CD's—two of which won Grammys. Eric went on to perform with artists such as Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Aaron Neville, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, The Rippingtons, Lou Rawls, David Lee Roth, B.B. King, Ramsey Louis, Patti Labelle, Olivia Newton-John, and many others.
