St James

Mozart’s much-loved opera The Marriage of Figaro is a rollicking tale of love, lust and long-held secrets: a high farce that was also deeply subversive for the times. The action takes place over one crazy, passion-fuelled day full of plots, double crosses and seductions.

The composer must have known he was playing with fire when, from the starchy confines of Vienna, he threw his musical genius into an adaptation of Beaumarchais’ scandalous new play, Le Mariage de Figaro. He let his hot-blooded characters run riot with the current notions of class and aristocracy: in it, the Count is a rival to his servant for the affections of a maid and loses the game. Both play and opera were a roaring success.

In this brand new production New Zealand bass Wade Kernot sings Figaro, with celebrated Italian soprano Nuccia Focile as the Countess. Aidan Lang will make his NZ directing debut and renowned opera and orchestral conductor Lion Friend will take the baton.
