Queen of the Whole Universe

Date(s):
12 March 2011
Venue:
Opera House

Queen of the Whole Universe, a very queer beauty pageant, first entertained audiences in September 2004. QWU, the most successful New Zealand LGBTT theatrical fundraising event, will be in its 8th year when it hits the Opera House stage in Wellington on Saturday 12 March 2011.

The basis of the show is a beauty pageant with a difference where most of the 36 beauties are boys dressed as girls representing countries and other obscure places but all with one mission, to receive the coveted plastic crown. Sounds like a recipe for disaster with that number of drag queens or is it: Queen of the Whole Universe – a very queer beauty pageant.

Highlights of the show include the opening dance extravaganza, the ‘QWU® Headgear of Nations’ where some headgear is at least 2m high and act two, where the finalists compete in two unique and camp categories.

The show has donated in excess of $145,000.00 to HIV/AIDS Charities since its inception in 2004. A major achievement for all cast, crew, sponsors, key supporters and the dedicated audiences New Zealand wide.

QWU® presently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest drag queen stage show set at the St James Theatre in Wellington, June 2009.
