ADVICE FOR TEACHERS BRINGING A SCHOOL GROUP TO THE THEATRE

Theatre Administration Telephone: 04 802 4060
Theatre Administration Fax: 04 802 4030

Arrivals
Please arrive at the theatre no later than 15 minutes before the start time of the performance to ensure that everyone is seated in time.

Stalls - Ground floor
Dress Circle - 1st floor
Grand Circle (The St James) - 2nd floor
Gallery (Opera House) - 2nd floor - access via ground floor café

Please do NOT hand out individual tickets to each child. Present your group of tickets to our Front of House staff. They will show you to your seats.

When seating, we ask that you try to position adults behind adults so that students' views are clear.

Toilets
At The St James Theatre, toilets are located on the ground and 1st floors. At The Opera House, toilets are located on the 1st floor only.

Disabled toilets are available in the ground floor foyers of both theatres.

Coach Parking
Coaches are welcome to drive past The St James Theatre or The Opera House in order to drop off children. Please note however that coaches cannot wait outside either of the theatres and must find their own parking. Here are some suggestions:

A) Opposite Duxton Hotel, Wakefield Street
B) Thorndon Quay
C) School of Dance/Drama, Hutchison Road, Newtown

Lunch
Unfortunately we do not have the space or facilities for children to have their lunch inside our buildings. If children are bringing their lunch with them, we suggest the waterfront by Te Papa or Civic Square, which have some excellent picnic spots if the weather is fine.

Otherwise, there is a large food court over the road from The St James Theatre within the Reading Cinema complex, which includes McDonalds. Burger King is also very close to the theatre on the corner of Courtenay Place and Tory Street.

Public Transport
Bus routes 1, 2, 5, 14, 27, 42, 43, 44, 56, 57, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, Airport Flyer 91 and City Circular all come past the Railway Station and stop very close to both theatres.

Cars
If the children you are supervising are arriving in private cars, we suggest you recommend the car park located in the Reading Cinema complex (entrance on Wakefield Street).

Accompanying Adults
We encourage you to invite parents or other adults to meet the theatre's minimum supervision requirements - 1 adult for every 10 children.

Disabled Facilities
Disabled access is available to the ground floor (stalls seating area) of both theatres. There are a number of places in the stalls at both theatres to park wheelchairs during performances.

Disabled toilets are available in the ground floor foyers of both theatres.

Lift access is available to the first floor (dress circle) of The St James, however there are still a number of steps to access seats in the auditiorium at this level. There are steps to the Grand Circle.

There are no lift facilities at The Opera House and there are steps to the Dress Circle and Gallery.

If you are hearing impaired, there is a hearing loop installed in The St James stalls and a map of the loop is shown on our website www.stjames.co.nz. There is no hearing loop in The Opera House.

Theatre Policy
School parties and those in special care are the responsibility of their teachers or carers, parents or guardians, who must ensure that appropriate behaviour is followed in the auditorium. There is a Duty Manager at all performances who will be happy to help with any problems. We reserve the right to ask anyone causing a disturbance to other patrons or staff to leave the theatre.
